By Chris Peers
“Mammalian Mayhem”was originally conceived as a follow up to our popular“Saurian Safari”dinosaur hunting rules. It is not just another supplement to“Saurian Safari”though, but a complete rule system in its own right, so it is not necessary to have a copy of“Saurian Safari”in order to play“Mammalian Mayhem”. As the title suggests, it enables the players to expand their hunting activities into the Age of Mammals, and to take on a wide range of quarry - living, extinct or simply mysterious - from prehistoric sabre-tooths to modern African big game. We took the opportunity to produce a 2ndEdition when we sold out of the first print run, partly because we wanted to give the rule book a new look to bring it into line with the rest of our recent publications. We have included a wider selection of weapons and quarry, especially the prehistorics, to take advantage of the much greater variety of models now becoming available. A few other minor changes have also been introduced - notably the random movement system for hunters, which we think adds a bit more uncertainty and excitement to the game.
The main difference from“Saurian Safari”is that mammals compensate for being punier than dinosaurs by using their larger brains, and so have to be able to respond more flexibly to different circumstances. So the approach used in the dinosaur hunting rules - in which the players all take on the identities of the hunters, while their quarry reacts in rigid pre-programmed ways - has been replaced here by one in which the animals themselves play a much more active role.
Each player may choose to control either a human hunter character or an animal. The hunters move, shoot etc. in a fairly conventional “skirmish wargame” sort of way, by means of dice, while for the animal players we have introduced a card driven system, using an ordinary pack of playing cards.
