Loom of Slaughter Medieval and Dark Age Battles and Skirmish rules, c. 500 - 1485 AD.
"The Loom of Slaughter"is a set of rules for small scale battles and skirmishes set in medieval north-west Europe. Both the time span and the geographical area covered may require a few words of explanation. Exactly what is meant by "medieval" remains a subject of debate among scholars, but in Britain it traditionally covers the era between the Anglo-Saxon invasions and the end of the Wars of the Roses, or approximately 500 to 1485 AD. In other words it incorporates not only what we conventionally describe as the "Middle Ages", but also what used to be better known as the "Dark Ages" (as if our ignorance of them was their own fault). Avoiding the question of whether an Anglo-Saxon "invasion" ever happened in the way in which it is supposed to have done, this start date is convenient because it marks the final disappearance of the Celtic war chariot, and presumably of troops armed and organized in the old Roman style. The end date coincides roughly with the rise of a new style of centralized royal power, and also of handguns efficient enough to challenge the supremacy of archery and cold steel. The period in between was characterized by a lack of strong central government, the rise of a turbulent noble class which lived for war, and bloody feuds and general lawlessness among all classes of society.
