Atomic Cafe 1957 Apocalypse Wargaming Rules - Print Version

1957 was drawing to a close. The U.S.S.R. had launched a multi-stage ballistic missile earlier in the year and the U.S., not wanting to fall behind in the missile race, launches its first ICBM on December 17th.

Sometime between that launch and the next morning, something happened. Whether it was Soviet fear of American missiles, American desire for a pre-emptive strike, or some incident lost in the ashes, bombers from both sides were launched and nuclear war arrived. Americans awoke to mushroom clouds over major cities and military complexes. Communications were down. Outside their immediate neighborhood, those people who survived had no idea what existed. For days afterward, planes continued to drop whatever bombs they had available, nuclear, conventional, chemical or biological.

Eventually the rain of death from the skies fell silent. The people that still lived emerged from basements and bunkers to find a world shattered. Survival became the first priority and gangs of the strongest emerge to take control.

With what remained of the U.S.  government only able to extend their control to the vicinity around Maryland and all other civilian and military infrastructure decimated, rival gangs formed and claimed their territory.

President Eisenhower was missing.

Soon the world is blasted to ruins and only small pockets, isolated from the destruction and ensuing radioactive fallout, prove habitable over the long term. And between those pockets, battles rage between gangs of survivors (The 8th Avenue Greasers, The Michigan State Bowling League, and others) and rogue military units. All of them seeking food, fuel, or a place free of radiation.

This is the world of the Atomic Cafe.
