this 2nd Edition is offered to the public as a general purpose fast-play set of rules, covering the period from the French Revolution to the introduction of smokeless powder and quick-firing artillery. The emphasis here is consequently rather different from that of most 19th century sets - of which the reader might well think that there are more than enough already. Because they are intended to work well with fictional scenarios and even fictional armies, these rules aim to capture what we believe is the essence of the period, without concentrating too intently on the tactical and organisational details of any particular conflict. Nevertheless they are also suitable for any of the real conflicts of the 19th century, and playtesting experience has proved that they often give a more "realistic" result than many more narrowly focused rule sets.
